Kirk Newman began his career experimenting with abstract painting and sculpture, but became increasingly intrigued with the human figure. He felt the human form could speak to the complexities of the modern world. In Children of the World, you see the intrinsic ability that children have to become instant playmates, no matter their differences. This piece was commissioned specifically by Fred and Lena Meijer. It describes children from around the world and with a range of abilities. For Fred and Lena, this was the only work in the entire sculpture collection with which they intended a specific message to the public – that Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park was for everyone.
