For J.W.

The work of Tony Smith is considered part of Minimalism, a movement in Contemporary art history where the focus is on shapes, forms and volumes. During his time at the University of Hawaii, Smith created a series of nine sculptures that he later named after a few of his teaching colleagues. The sculpture For J.W. is named after John Wisnosky, a student at the University. The simplicity of the form should not be underestimated, for in it there is a clarity of line, plane and mass.
