Antony Gormley is among the most acclaimed sculptors working today, most frequently working with the human figure. After studies in art, archaeology, and anthropology and extensive travels studying Buddhist meditation, he embarked on a career in which he often uses his own body as the basis for his work, including One and Other. Cast in solid iron, which weathers according to the elements over time, this sculpture captures a generalized likeness of the artist. Rather than merely describing physical appearances, the quiet of the pose turns attention inward to the interior philosophical and psychological existence of the human experience.
